First encounter with kratom – Accidental curiosity
It was a Tuesday, and I was in no hurry. The world around me moved with its usual restlessness. People hurried through the streets, engrossed in conversations and their routines. Not me. I sat at a window table in a small café that smelled of roasted beans, watching the world go by. A word from a passing conversation caught my attention: kratom . It hovered between sentences, vaguely familiar, yet unclear. I could have ignored it—but instead, it drew me in. I sensed that a door to a new experience had been opened.

My research: What is kratom?
At home, I opened my laptop. Kratom – I typed it into the search bar. What I found was fascinating: a tree from Southeast Asia whose leaves have been used for centuries to achieve various effects. In low doses, it is said to be stimulating and euphoric, in higher doses calming and sedating. I read on. Kratom contains numerous alkaloids, primarily mitragynine and 7-hydroxy-mitragynine, which act on opioid receptors.
Reports spoke of increased concentration, a pleasant calmness, and clearer perception. But also of people who took it daily and couldn't imagine doing without it. Some described a profound serenity, others reported an almost euphoric alertness. In Thailand, the leaves are traditionally chewed to combat fatigue during long working hours. One word kept recurring: balance. The effect seemed paradoxical—both stimulating and calming, depending on the dose. The more I read, the more my curiosity grew. But I also came across warnings: frequent use can quickly lead to addiction.
Withdrawal symptoms were described, similar to those of opiates. The long-term health consequences are still largely unexplored. A complex picture formed before my eyes. Kratom – a substance somewhere between traditional medicine and modern "legal high," between remedy and recreational drug. Some saw it as a useful aid in everyday life, others as a substance to be used with caution. I closed my laptop, lost in thought. The fascination remained, but so did a sense of caution.
Kratom seemed to be a substance that should not be underestimated.
First Kratom Experience – The Moment of Ingestion
Two days later, the unassuming package lay before me. The smell? Earthy, heavy, like dried leaves in an old wooden chest. I knew the setting was important: no stress, no distractions . So I waited. Dusk bathed my apartment in warm light, the silence between the minutes grew longer. I was ready. I stirred a teaspoon of the powder into a glass of water. It floated briefly, then sank, the liquid becoming cloudy. The taste? Bitter, like dry earth or rain on hot asphalt. I swallowed. And waited.
The effect: A feeling of stillness.
Nothing happened for the first few minutes. Then, very slowly, it came. Not like a blow, but like a sunrise. A gentle warmth spread through my chest. My muscles, which I hadn't even noticed were tense, relaxed. No high, no euphoria. But no tiredness either. I was simply there . The world sounded softer. The ticking clock was still there, but unimportant. I looked at my hands—everything was as usual, and yet somehow different. I closed my eyes. The inner peace was palpable, as if someone had placed a soft veil over my thoughts. I remembered past moments when I had been searching for this kind of serenity—for a feeling of presence, without restlessness. How long did I sit like that for? Maybe five minutes. Maybe an hour. But I didn't care. I was no longer in time.
The second dose: A changed perspective
The next day, I decided to try kratom again—this time with a more conscious intention. I took the same amount, leaned back, and tried to perceive the difference. This time it was clearer. My mind was alert but not rushed. Thoughts flowed more freely. I began to write, losing myself in words that often falter. I wondered if it was my imagination—if my perception was merely shaped by expectation. But the feeling was real.
The balance between benefit and habit
I started reading more about the long-term effects of kratom. Some people swore by it, others warned of potential addiction. I wondered: Where was the line between occasional use and a daily habit? I decided to use kratom only on days when I consciously wanted to relax or concentrate—not out of routine. Because I didn't want that feeling of stillness to become something I took for granted.
Was it worth it?
The effects gradually subsided. No crash, no loss. Just a quiet retreat, like a gentle wave. I wondered how many people had ever truly broken free from their hectic daily lives to be still. Would I take kratom again? Maybe. Maybe not. But it showed me that sometimes all it takes is a small shift to truly experience a moment.
