What are edibles?

Edibles are cannabis products that you can eat or drink. Anything containing THC, CBD, or other active ingredients of the cannabis plant can be called an edible.

They come in countless variations, including:

  • Classics like space cakes and hash brownies
  • gummy bears , lollipops and chocolate
  • Beverages such as teas, sodas or even coffee
  • Capsules and oils

💡 Fun Fact: Edibles are nothing new! They were already used for pain management in the 19th century, before cannabis was banned. Today they are experiencing a strong comeback.

Why are edibles so popular?

Edibles offer advantages that set them apart from traditional consumption methods like smoking or vaping. Here are the main reasons:

1. Discretion

Edibles look like normal snacks. No smoke, no noticeable smell. Perfect for anyone who wants to remain inconspicuous.

2. Taste

Whether sweet or savory: Edibles taste good – and better than any joint.

3. Long-lasting effect

The effects of edibles often last 6 to 12 hours. Perfect if you want to relax for a long time.

4. Precise dosage

With purchased edibles, you know exactly how much THC or CBD they contain. No guesswork like with a joint.

5. Healthier for the lungs

Edibles are gentle on your airways. No smoking, no vaping – just pure enjoyment.

How do edibles work?

The effects of edibles are particularly strong – and differ significantly from smoking.

Why do they work differently than joints?

When smoking, THC enters the bloodstream directly through the lungs. With edibles, however, the THC is digested in the stomach and converted to 11-hydroxy-THC in the liver. This is what causes the effect:

  • Stronger: 11-Hydroxy-THC is more potent than "normal" THC.
  • Slower: It takes 30 to 120 minutes before you notice anything.
  • Longer lasting: The effect can last up to 12 hours.

Typical effects of edibles

  • Relaxation and stress reduction
  • Pain relief
  • euphoria
  • Better sleep
  • Increased appetite (Munchies!)

Take care with the dosage!

Edibles take longer to work, so take it easy. Start with a small portion and wait at least 60 minutes before eating more. Otherwise, you risk:

  • nausea
  • Anxiety or paranoia
  • Loss of control

Make your own edibles

Want to get creative? With a few basics, you can conjure up your own edibles.

Decarboxylation – the first step

Before you begin, you need to activate the active ingredients in the cannabis. This is called decarboxylation.

Here's how:

  1. In the oven: Chop your cannabis flowers. Preheat the oven to 110°C. Spread the flowers on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Let them heat for 30 to 45 minutes – done!

  8. Place the glass in a pot of hot water (approx. 90 °C).
  9. Let it simmer for 60 minutes.

Make your own cannabutter

You can use cannabutter to make brownies, cookies, and other treats.

Ingredients:

  • 10g decarboxylated cannabis
  • 250 g butter
  • Water

Directions:

  1. Heat the butter with water in a pot (approx. 85 °C).
  2. Add the cannabis and let everything simmer for 2 hours.
  3. Sieve the mixture and let it cool.
  4. Your butter is ready – store it and enjoy!

The legal situation for edibles depends on the THC content:

  • THC-containing edibles: Illegal in Germany. You have to make them yourself.
  • CBD edibles: Legal as long as the THC content is below 0.2%.

When buying, always make sure to choose reputable suppliers with laboratory certificates.
