Hash brownies are a classic among cannabis edibles – easy to bake, delicious, and with a long-lasting effect. But how do you make them right? Here you'll learn everything you need to know about dosage, decarboxylation, and the perfect recipe.
What you should know before baking
Before you get started, there are a few things to keep in mind. Edibles have a different effect than smoked or vaporized cannabis:
- Delayed effect: The high only sets in after 30-120 minutes.
- Longer duration: The effect can last up to 6 hours or longer.
- Intensity: Edibles can be stronger than expected. Start with a low dose.
The correct THC dose for hash brownies
- Beginners: 1-2.5 mg THC per brownie
- Occasional users: 2.5-10 mg THC
- Experienced users: 10-30 mg THC
- Warning: More than 30 mg of THC can lead to severe side effects such as paranoia or nausea.
If you don't know the THC content, use 10g of cannabis per 450g of butter as a rule of thumb.

Step 1: Decarboxylation – Activation of THC
Raw cannabis has hardly any psychoactive effect. THCA is only converted into THC through heat (decarboxylation).
Here's how:
- Preheat oven to 110-120°C.
- Finely chop the cannabis and spread it on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Leave in the oven for 90 minutes, until golden brown.
Now your cannabis is ready for cannabis butter.
Step 2: Making the cannabis butter
Cannabis butter is the base for hash brownies and other edibles. Here's how to make it:
- Cut 250g of butter into cubes.
- Bring 1 liter of water to a boil in a pot.
- Add butter and let it melt.
- Add decarboxylated cannabis and reduce to 70-90°C.
- Simmer for 4 hours, stirring every 30 minutes.
- Filter the mixture through a sieve or straining cloth.
- Let the butter cool and then solidify in the refrigerator.
The next day you can process the butter further.
Step 3: Bake hash brownies
Ingredients
- 3 eggs
- 100 g flour
- 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 200 g sugar
- 1 pinch of salt
- 1 packet of vanilla sugar
- 1 tsp cocoa powder
- 225 g dark chocolate
- 1 tsp regular butter
- 125 g cannabis butter
preparation
- Preheat oven to 150°C.
- Grease a brownie baking pan.
- Bring water to a boil in a pot, place a bowl on top.
- Melt dark chocolate and cannabis butter in a bowl.
- Let it cool slightly, then stir in the eggs, cocoa powder, sugar and vanilla sugar.
- Mix flour, baking powder and salt, sift and fold in.
- Pour the batter into the baking tin and sprinkle the remaining chocolate over it.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes.
Once cooled, you can decorate the brownies or enjoy them straight away.
Storage and shelf life
- At room temperature: approx. 5 days
- In the refrigerator: up to 2 weeks
- Freezing: up to 3 months (well wrapped in cling film & aluminum foil)
Conclusion
Hash brownies are easy to bake and offer a long-lasting high. Proper dosage and decarboxylation are crucial for achieving the full effect. And remember: wait at least two hours after the first brownie before making another!
